Here’s a quick note to let everyone know I’m heading to Houston this Saturday, June 20 for some spectacular DJ mischief at Block 21 (located at 2420 Washington, 77007, click HERE for a map). This should be a bit of a wild night as there will be three areas of music and it seems it’s a FREE event. I believe I’m slated to play a bit of an extended set and will also make a pre-gig appearance on the Soular Grooves radio show.
I’m really looking forward to this … I’ve learned over the years that Texas likes to get down and dirty with the house music. If you’re in the area then I hope you’ll make it by. Read the rest of this entry »
It’s sort of amazing that fifteen years ago I gathered with a small group of people I met at the then relatively new Phat N’ Jazzy club night to plot the formation of the Eighth Dimension “collective”. The idea was to help each other out, working towards the common goal of some sort of success in the music industry. Since then Eighth Dimension has evolved into a record label, a music publishing company, a management/consulting team, and, most recently, an independent publicist helping other labels get their music out there. As the clichĂ© goes, it’s been a long, wild ride.
It was Jon (Pimp Daddy Nash) who had the realization that we’ve hit fifteen years as a business and, certainly, as friends and it was his feeling that a party was in order. I’m really not one for celebrations such as these but I’ve gotten a bit more excited about it as the date closes in. This party will be a nice excuse to hang with all these great people who helped make my last fifteen years navigating the music landscape a fun, exciting, and much less complicated endeavor. I’m also expecting many of the fans and friends who have come in and out of our sphere in this decade and a half as well as the newer faces who are just there to hear some great tunes. I’m packing my bags and getting ready for the long jet plane ride across the watery divide … I’m heading to Europe for a few gigs, mostly concentrated in my ancestral realm of Scotland. I’m doing a “wee” festival, some pub action in Edinburgh, a return to two of my favorite joints (Club Snafu in Aberdeen and the Studio Warehouse in Glasgow), and then I make a Scottish exception to play the Remote Festival in Geneva, Switzerland. Here’s the schedule, with links:
Fri May 29 - Edinburgh, Scotland at Hawke & Hunter
Sat May 30 - Glasgow, Scotland at The Wee Chill
Fri June 5 - Glasgow, Scotland at SWG3 Studio Warehouse
Sat June 6 - Aberdeen, Scotland at Club Snafu (with Pat Mahoney of LCD Soundsystem)
Sun June 7 - Geneva, Switzerland at The Remote Festival
Anyone about? I hope to see some familiar faces once I’m over. I’m primed and ready for some especially down & dirty DJ action as my Scottish friends tend to demand. Fun times ahead.
Here’s a quick message to let you know that I’ll be in Boston tomorrow night (Friday, May 22) playing the after-hours party at Rise. Even wilder, I’ll be joined by my rambunctious friend Mr. Sleazy McQueen, known for his dastardly disco deeds and misdemeanors. We’ll be starting the tunes at 2 AM and this crazy thing will keep rocking until well after 6. There goes my beauty sleep.
It’s been a few years since I’ve set down my record crate in Boston so, if you’re in the area, I’m really hoping you’ll make it out. I’ll see you at Rise! Read the rest of this entry »
Here’s a quick note to let you know that I’ll be making the trek up to Jacksonville, FL this weekend to play at a new night called Oui Disco. Thus, this Saturday May 9 I’ll be lugging my record bag (filled with magic platters) to CafĂ© 331, located at 331 W. Forsyth Street (click HERE for map). Also part of the line-up will be Dan D’Mantra, Kevin M, and Justin Franklin. It’s a night of house music and future funk. The doors at at 9 PM, it’s 18 and up, and the cover is a mere $5.00.
I hope to see you there for Oui Disco! Read the rest of this entry »
A couple months back I was asked to participate in IntraHealth International’s ambitious project to help publicize the use of open source technologies in medicine as a revolutionary step towards better health care in Africa and other developing regions. This was being done by having artists, such as myself, remix the track “Wake Up” by African musical legend Youssou N’Dour. The finished remixes were to be given away for free, shared, traded, altered … all in the spirit of “open source”. You can read more and hear my effort by clicking HERE.
Now the project has been taken one step further. The parts and stems for Youssou’s “Wake Up” have now themselves become “open”, with all interested music producers invited to create their own remix of the track. This is achieved through the participation of Indaba Music, a community-based web space for musicians to find each other and collaborate online. (Colbert Report fans like myself may remember when Dan Zaccagnino of Indaba was on the show … watch HERE.)
Remixing “Wake Up” and working with Youssou N’Dour’s incredible voice was a thrill for me, and I even learned quite a bit from the experience. I’m sure you’ll reap the same benefits … remixing is a blast, eh? Give it a try.
Read more about The Youssou N’Dour and IntraHealth Open Collaboration project and how you can download the parts and participate by clicking HERE.
LIsten to the remixes already submitted by clicking HERE.
There’s also a contest with prizes for the ‘best mix’ as chosen by a small panel of judges which includes Youssou N’Dour himself. The contest ends May 12, 2009. That’s definitely a nice bonus but I’d mainly just be into the opportunity to remix such a cool track and work with the vocals of a legendary singer.
If you do remix “Wake Up” and post it up on Indaba then be sure to drop me a line with a link to your entry by clicking HERE. I’d love to check out what you do. I’ll be sure to leave a comment on Indaba for your mix as well.
Get remixing!
It’s been a while since I’ve posted a new DJ mix here but I’m hoping the frequency increases in the coming months. Soon I should be making an announcement regarding a monthly online radio show I’m launching which will mean monthly mixes that I’ll post here. Stay tuned.
In the meantime, here’s the free DJ mix I gave away at our April 2009 ¡Club Queso! party in Orlando, FL. I’m personally quite into this one, as it starts in a deep, techy house realm and smoothly evolves into the funky stuff. I hope you’ll dig it as well. Read the rest of this entry »
Right on, everybody … you may remember a time when a little party called Holy Frijoles! (the precursor to another little party called ¡Club Queso!) was hosted in downtown Orlando at a curious upstairs spot named AKA Lounge. It’s a cool club right by the corner of Pine and Magnolia, with steps leading up to a roomy, dark space tailor-made for dancing and drinking and the sorts of activities one does in nightclubs when funky tunes are playing.
And thus it’s been a while since I’ve played there myself … but this Saturday I’m revving up the wayback machine and returning to AKA Lounge to help launch a new regular night of house music mayhem titled Solid. I’ll be joined by a trio of associates, Rob Slac, Edson Xavier, and John Stuart, as we load up the tunes and fling aural goodness out onto the floor for all dancing feet to behold. Well, yeah … don’t be an April Fool. Instead be prompt and readied for the miraculous achievement that is ¡Club Queso! at the Peacock Room! Our latest fantastic miasma of sight and funky sound will take place this Friday, April 3. We’re taking it back to the primordial origins of the murky Queso with your heroes Q-Burns Abstract Message and Atnarko battling it out mano a mano behind the electric decks. There is bound to be an enticing musical artifact or two from WMC to thrill the ears and feet. Lola B will once again supply the magical atmosphere with glorious aplomb and Showsource Productions will help make things sound extra meaty. Read the rest of this entry »
