Bill Hicks Remembered …

We’re coming up on the 15 year anniversary of Bill Hicks‘ death. I didn’t catch on to Hicks until afterwards (though I’m sure I saw some of his Letterman appearances when I was an 80’s teenager as I watched that show every night then) but he means a whole lot to me. There’s something a bit transcendent in both his humor and his personal story, how like a perfect prankster his words aspire to break down set ways by causing one to think and decipher the underlying message (more on the philosophy of “pranks” HERE). I personally believe he was the greatest comedian we’ve ever had, partly because he was so much more than a comedian. Maybe George Carlin came close to what Hicks did, I don’t know … but Bill Hicks is up there in my personal pantheon with Robert Anton Wilson, Burroughs, Tony Wilson, Tim Leary, etc … figures whose way of thinking ended up shaping mine.

A New Q-BAM DJ Mix On Samurai.FM

The Sick Moves channel on Samurai.FM (sponsored by Blunted Funk Recordings) has just posted a new Q-Burns Abstract Message DJ mix. Here I am in the dreamy slo-mo disco mode … lots of surprises in this mix, and a playlist that spans the years that I’ve been listening to music. I really like this mix a lot and plan on doing quite a few more in this style.

I’m DJ’ing In San Francisco Tonight

Hello, hazy morning in San Francisco … and I’m spending the day purposefully gathering all of my psychic energy in anticipation of the hours of madness that I’ll be taking part in tonight. It’s a couple of gigs, both organized in celebration of my good friend DJ M3’s birthday (which is today … go to his MySpace page and wish him a happy birthday). On a related note, HERE is a quick interview with M3 in the SF Weekly you might enjoy.

The Hoochie Tribute DJ Mix From 2002

Here’s a DJ mix I did for the Hoochie Productions site way back in 2002 as promotion for the Hoochies Halloween Party at Knock Knock, which I was playing at. I think I dressed up as Elvis for that party. Hoocie Productions are still throwing parties in Orlando, and these are consistently the best house music parties in town. Check out their MySpace page for what they’ve got coming up.

Back to this DJ mix … I think its’ a lot of fun, captures my style right as it started easing into more of a disco-y flavor, and I wish I knew where I put that “Feed The Cat” record … i really want to start playing it again.

Here’s the mix … enjoy!

You can download this mix from its SoundCloud page located HERE. Here’s some news: you can now download from SoundCloud without being a registered member. But you should still register and follow me … I’m putting new things up all of the time.
I’ve also got more DJ mixes available for downloading at qubestunes.com

I hope everyone has a great weekend once again. I’m taking it off, relaxing and enjoying the rare cold weather here in central Florida. Next weekend I’ll be in San Francisco for a frenzied shindig at The Triple Crown, so I’m definitely gearing up for that.

Eighth Dimension Music In Boing Boing’s CES Reports

My friend Xeni and some of the Boing Boing Gadgets crew are currently at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, checking out the latest gizmos and having a blast. They are getting it all on video and posting regular reports of their antics and discoveries on Boing Boing. Not only are these videos quite entertaining and interesting but they’ve been nice enough to soundtrack the last episodes with songs by yours truly and tracks from my Eighth Dimension label. (more…)

A Two Part Spacey Downtempo DJ Mix From 1997

I missed last week’s “Friday DJ Mix” posting (damn holiday malaise) so this week I’ve got a bit of surprise … it’s two sides of a cassette mix tape that I recorded way back in 1997 (and, yes, this was ripped off cassette). It’s got a dark, downtempo vibe and features quite a bit of the tracks and remixes that I was recording at the time. Even though this mix is over a decade old (and I’ve certainly grown as a DJ since then) I still really enjoy listening to this mix and constantly find myself going back to it.

Have a listen here:

You can also download both parts of this mix from their SoundCloud pages located HERE and HERE but you’ll have to be a SoundCloud member to be able to do so.

Have a great weekend everyone! I was supposed to be gigging in Las Vegas but was thwarted by shady promoters with a knack for disappearing without a trace. Thus I’ll be hiding out at home rearranging furniture and firing up the studio.
