Replicated Mix: A Blade Runner Inspired Sound Session

Last night’s Replicated art show at The Falcon in Orlando was a blast. Celebrating the 30th anniversary of Blade Runner, the exhibition presented a variety of artists’ works using the iconic film as inspiration. The artwork is still there and is quite cool, so pop on by to have a peak until March 2. I supplied the soundtrack to the show, filling the first two opening hours with a session also inspired by the music, vibe, sounds, and dialogue from Blade Runner. As requested by many who were there, I’m making a recording of this session available to download. Keep in mind this isn’t your normal DJ set … this one was intended to create an appropriate atmosphere for viewing the art work. It’s quite moody and very electronic with a few unexpected moments. At the beginning of last month I had the pleasure of DJ’ing at Bar Standard in Denver, Colorado. For a portion of my set I was accompanied by my wonderful and talented friend Lisa Shaw who performed a number of her songs while I mixed the backing tracks. A recent web search unearthed the following video documentation of this event, deftly recorded by a couple of covert dance-floor inhabitants.

Two Live DJ Sets From Europe

Last month I had the pleasure of doing four DJ dates across Europe, hitting Bucharest, Moscow, Istanbul, and Glasgow. As expected, it was great fun and all the gigs were a nice success. As you’ll hear, both sets start with the same track but then veer off in different directions. I think it’s kind of nice how different these sets are even though they are only four days apart. The Bucharest set turned out to be an hour’s dose of compact energy, while the two hour Istanbul set is sort of a steady builder, developing into some nice deep house at the end. I hope you like these.

Free Halloween Download: Sneaky Creeps (ft. Spooky Molder)

Just for shivers, and in time for Halloween, we’ve decided to record quite the ghoulish track for our ghostly friends. “Sneaky Creeps” was written and performed deep in the Eighth Dimension crypt and features the gruesome vocals of the mysterious Spooky Molder, who managed to join the ranks of the undead especially for this session. It’s a crunchy and hideous affair, reminiscent of a skeleton garage band but with enough bounce to to make your cobwebs shimmy. I just stumbled upon this DJ mix by Reno-based DJ Ctrl-Alt-Delete as posted on the Chillbass music blog (“created to promote DEEP, MOODY, AND BASS HEAVY music!”). Not only did Mr. Ctrl-Alt-Delete include two tracks from my Invisible Airline album but he accompanied them with cool cuts from the likes of Burial, DJ Spooky, and Moby. I’m honored. Invisible Airwaves Radio Show – September Edition

Here’s a mix recorded live at a fantastic club night called 5uinto in Brasilia, Brazil. This happened a little over two weeks ago in the midst of my busy three week South American tour. Hot and heavy; a refreshingly energetic dance-floor for the entire 2 hours … and I was greeted with birthday cake right after my set (it wasn’t my birthday).

Chainsaw Creativity + A Free Download

I’ve always been into exploring others’ methods of creativity, those being the tricks and things one does to spark their artistic urges. In fact, when I was a teenager I helmed a photocopied punk rock fanzine called Plague On Wheels (bonus points if you know the reference) and every time I interviewed a band one of my questions would be “What are your methods of creativity?” Not very punk rock, I know, but I was really interested … and I still am.

So it’s no surprise that I really dig the blog Modyfier which basically asks that same question, and only that question, to a number of electronic music producers. The idea is that the musician contributes an original track or a DJ mix and then it is explained how this work came about. My friends Pezzner and Brett Johnson have been past participants and I’m pleased to announce that my own contribution just went live. You can read it HERE.

I chose the Balearic Version of the track “Chainsaw”, culled from my recent EP on EIGHT-TRACKS. I thought it was interesting how this version came about, as it’s almost a non-satirical parody of the original song. I talk about this and then, as an added bonus, Modyfier and I are giving the reader a free download of the song at the bottom of the post.

The label and I plan on commissioning remixes and re-edits of this version of “Chainsaw” to be released in the fall, so stay tuned. In the meantime, be sure to bookmark or add Modyfier to your RSS reader feed. It’s totally worth keeping up with for some continued insight into the creative process.
