Today Xeni Jardin of the illustrious Boing Boing was featured in Amoeba Records‘ regular segment “What’s In My Bag?” where the guest picks musical recommendations from within the store’s vast inventory. The always generous Jardin gave a fantastic plug to yours truly and held up a vinyl 12″ of my This Time single. I’m humbled.
So, there may be a lot of new people looking at this site today. Hello. If you’d like to check out some of my music, maybe for the first time, then know that I’ve got pretty much everything I’ve recorded streaming in its entirety on my Soundcloud page, which can be found by clicking HERE. Admittedly, that’s a lot of music, so here are some suggestions as to where to start:
- I’m a big fan of the distant collaboration/Third Mind technique known as remixing, and I’m remixing all the time. So most of my latest production work involves remixes. You can listen to my most recent remixes HERE.
- I’m probably best known for my compact discs released by Astralwerks. You can listen to my first album Feng Shui by clicking HERE and the second, Invisible Airline, which prominently features the vocals of Ms. Lisa Shaw, by clicking HERE.
- I also DJ in various cities quite a bit. You probably noticed some upcoming gig dates on this web site. I’ve got a load of DJ mixes in various styles that you can listen to and download at will HERE.
I’ve also got a Facebook fan page where I post all sorts of new DJ mixes, unreleased tracks, news, and salacious gossip … you can find this here: www.facebook.com/QBurnsAbstractMessage
Lastly, I’m can be found on Twitter where I actively post about my activities and obsessions (which generally include foreign movie poster art, Lucha Libre, and deceased beat writers): www.twitter.com/qburns
Thanks for checking me out and I really hope you like what you hear. I’ve got a lot of new music on the way in the coming months so stay tuned. And If you’d like to contact me and say hello then feel free to do so. I’d love to hear from you.

I’ve had a nice history of Thursday weeklies in Orlando, including the beloved (at least by me) Holy Frijoles Thursday party at Knock Knock way back in the day. So, with that in mind, I’m totally pleased to announce a brand new Thursday party that I’m starting at downtown Orlando’s plush outdoor venue SkySixty. And we’ll be ready to go as soon as this very Thursday, February 25.
This weekly party will be called Starlight, inspired in part by the obvious fact that at SkySixty you’ll be dancing ‘under the stars.’ But it’s also inspired by the style of music I’ll be playing, and this wonderful song by NYC’s Escort bearing the same name gives you a healthy clue:
I’m going to be focusing on smooth vocal house tunes, with touches of disco and broken-beat in the mix for good measure. The flyer byline says “deep, sensual, vocal house music under the stars” which is exactly what we’re aiming for here. Basically, cool tunes that you can choose to dance along to or you can just chill with your friends and have a listen. Starlight will be a fun, casual night in a beautiful, comfortable setting.
SkySixty is also making this a Ladies’ Night which means that all drinks will be half off all night for (say in seductive voice) “the ladies.” Nice one, eh?
This happens this Thursday, February 25, and every Thursday at SkySixty, located at 60 N. Orange Avenue in downtown Orlando, above The Social. Click HERE for a map or directions. There is no cover and it’s 21 and up.
So, yeah … I’m quite excited about this and I hope you’ll make it out. If the night does well then eventually we’ll be bringing some very special surprise guests. Stay tuned, and we’ll see you on Thursdays!
The latest Invisible Airwaves radio show is now alive, featuring a couple hours of the latest and coolest in the deep house realm. There’s also a classic or two thrown in for kicks. If you’d like to tune in to have a listen then here are the times & places:

The complete tracklist for this month’s mix can be found below the fold …
Our good friends at Stompy.com have just released a digital compilation album to coincide with the beginning of the new year. The purpose of the compilation is to highlight the many styles of house music that can be found on Stompy, and most of the tracks are, until now, unreleased. In addition to cool cuts by the likes of DJ Sneak, Johnny Fiasco, Radio Slave, Random Soul, and Lance De Sardi there is an exclusive track by your pal Q-Burns Abstract Message.
The best part about this is it’s totally free. It won’t cost you anything to check out & download these tracks. Convinced? Click HERE. The compilation is only available for a few weeks so be sure to grab it soon.
A little bit about my track on this compilation, titled “Melodica” : it’s a techy and atmospheric house track that I recorded in the early 2000s as the lead cut on an EP for the NYC label Fiji Recordings. Unfortunately, Fiji fell victim to the plague that caused many vinyl labels to close down in the first half of the decade. Thus, this track sat unnoticed and unplayed on an errant hard drive for many years. Its original inspiration was my purchase of a melodica, an instrument that can be heard on classic recordings by artists as diverse as Augustus Pablo and New Order. I think the track still sounds pretty contemporary, and has worked well for the dancefloor in recent sets where I’ve played it out. There are 2 other unheard tracks from the same session (which were also to be part of the Fiji Recordings EP) … I’ll also release those for free in the next couple months so stay tuned.
thanks to all who made it out to Dharma Lounge last night in Charlotte, NC .. what an excellent vibe + fantastic time. hope to be back soon. 1 week ago
