Invisible Airwaves #16 – April Edition

I’m told April showers will eventually bring May flowers, but for now we’ll have to contend with the latest episode of my Invisible Airwaves radio show. It’s another jam-packed mix as, once again, I encountered too many outstanding tunes in the past month to fit in my allotted two hours. Remix: Gazeebo – “Gushing Climax”

Some intentionally watery (and slightly naughty) remix action, this time inflicted upon Colorado’s Gazeebo for their NC-17 rated Adults Only series. My latest trip is imagining a flowing river as I work on my productions, having the musical elements develop and dissipate naturally, like floating past structures on the shoreline. I’m playing some big, bouncy bass guitar run through a who-knows-what effect, its riff sort of being the melodic anchor. Staccato synth arpeggiations flow (yes) in and out and I’m happily able to include some cheap-sounding string pads. Head-bobbing beat-smith and a slinky disposition meet underneath a flashing red neon light. You’re never too old to get carded at the door at this club. Have a listen:

This remix joins rockin’ remixes by Irregular Disco Workers and Lou Teti of the same “Gushing Climax” original. It’s been released through Community Recordings and can be found on Juno Download as well as other fine digital shops.

Recommended: A Chris & Cosey DJ Mix

Today I’ve found myself listening repeatedly to this DJ mix put together by Chris Carter and Cosey Fanni Tutti as part of The Quietus mix series. You may know Chris & Cosey for their extensive discography as a duo, and you may also know them as one half of iconoclastic musical heroes Throbbing Gristle. TG were especially influential to me as a teenage lover of all things musically controversial and I completely wore out copies of their various albums (as well as my tattered edition of the Industrial Culture Handbook of which their interview was a highlight). This exceptional mix betrays Chris & Cosey’s unique historical perspective on music recent and past and will be the background soundtrack to many future days of work here at Q-BAM HQ. Enjoy:

On a sad side note, Chris & Cosey’s partner in (audio) crime in Throbbing Gristle, Peter “Sleazy” Christopherson, passed away at the end of last year.

Invisible Airwaves Radio Show – January Edition

I’m launching 2011 with a whole new series of Invisible Airwaves shows and a new theme song (an edit of the Balearic Version of “Chainsaw,” if you wanna know). This mix gives baby new year a gentle spank with a selection of tunes that are slower in tempo than usual as well as a bit more melancholy in vibe. I usually find myself a bit reflective at the beginning of January and this episode reflects that. I hope you enjoy it! Here’s the track list:

St. Louis + Louisville This Weekend

This weekend I’m hitching a ride on a jetliner and bringing my pack of tunes to a couple of fun mid-west venues. Friday night I will find myself in St. Louis and then on Saturday I’ll be skipping over to Louisville for a golden pair of rollicking Q-Burns Abstract Message DJ gigs. I’ve got loads of new music in tow and a few extra tricks up my sleeve so if you happen to be in the area then I hope you’ll join me. Here are the scintillating details:

Friday, December 3 – St. Louis, MO at Europe Nightclub

Blistering good vibes are expected as I roll into one of my favorite cities. The action starts at 9:30 PM with opening DJs Pattern Pusher + Slant-E, Narcosis, and Trevor Matthews. It’s 18 and up but if you’re over 21 then you can enjoy the dangerously free Stolli vodka until 11 PM. It’s a $10 cover, and Europe Nightclub is located at 710 North 15th Street. For lots more information go to this event’s Facebook page by clicking HERE.

Saturday, December 4 – Louisville, KY at Audyssey Nightclub

I’m a little late for what was once my annual Thanksgiving weekend Kentucky visit, but you knew I wouldn’t let you down totally. Louisville is always a good time and I’m positive this will be no exception. The club opens the doors at 10 PM and plan to keep things going until the break-a-dawn, just like those good old days. Nate FX, DJ Drek, and Cid Vicious are also spinning tunes and it’s 18 and up with a $10 cover. Audyssey Nightclub is located at 2420 South 4th Street in Louisville. To get tons of further details go to this event’s Facebook page by clicking HERE.

I hope to see you out and about!

PS – If you happen to be in Orlando then all is not lost … Joshua Iz, one of my favorite DJs and producers, will be playing a ¡Club Queso! at the Peacock Room with Atnarko and Sleazy McQueen. This happens this very Friday, December 3. For more information click HERE.

Innocent (The Cole Medina Remixes)

Innocent Remixes

Since its original release on the Astralwerks album Invisible Airline in 2001, the Q-Burns Abstract Message song “Innocent,” featuring the vocals of Lisa Shaw, has seen many reappearances and remixes. The first mixes by King Britt and Lovesky released as part of the Re-Routed collection on Eighth Dimension were soon followed by stunning reworks from Joey Negro and Magik Johnson for Britain’s NRK label.

Years later, Eighth Dimension was contacted by House Arrest label impresario Cole Medina requesting to revisit this track, one of his favorites, for an even newer remix. Being a big fan of Medina’s excellent work, which includes his top notch remix of Sleazy McQueen’s “Anna Due” and his many sought after re-edits, the label promptly handed over the “Innocent” parts anxious to hear the result. Cole Medina did not disappoint at all: he promptly delivered three completely different, fantastic remixes of “Innocent.”

The first of Medina’s mixes is the Nue Boogie Mix with its soulful, low-slung disco funk. Dramatic percussion and an unrelenting keyboard riff play against Lisa Shaw’s expressive vocal providing a dose of ear-pleasing musical tension. Cole’s Bottom Heavy Tunnel Mix increases the tempo with a late night club-ready house mix. Over the insistent four-on-the-floor rhythm a healthy wash of reverb is applied to Lisa’s vocals giving this one a decidedly big room feel. The delicately sparse arrangement is tailor made for booming in an after-hours warehouse. Finally, Cole turns a total 180 with his Why Love Sucks Mix, a downtempo treatment comfortably placing the song in Portishead territory. Lisa Shaw suddenly takes the role of chanteuse as cabaret piano and emotive strings hover over the plodding, trip hop beats.

Cole Medina‘s return to “Innocent” precedes future singles and projects from Q-Burns Abstract Message including the upcoming “Dark Roots” and the mysterious “Balearic Chainsaw.” Keeps ears locked on Eighth Dimension for more exciting sounds to come.
